Woodbury Breaks Ground on $60M Public Safety Campus as City Sees Wave of Development
Woodbury celebrates public safety campus groundbreaking while welcoming new retail, housing projects, and community garden expansion.
Woodbury marked a significant milestone last month when city, state, and federal leaders gathered on May 8 to break ground on the long-awaited Public Safety Campus renovation project at 2100 Radio Drive.
The $60 million project will renovate and expand the current public safety building, which has served the community since 1975. Mayor Anne Burt expressed her enthusiasm at the ceremony, noting that years of planning and collaboration have led to this moment. The renovated campus is expected to reopen in 2028 and will house Woodbury’s integrated public safety services including EMS, fire, police, and emergency management teams.
U.S. Representatives Betty McCollum and Angie Craig attended the groundbreaking, emphasizing the bipartisan cooperation that helped secure funding. Voters approved a 0.5% local sales tax in November 2024 to fund $50 million of the project, with the remaining costs covered by grants and a modest property tax increase.
Retail Growth at Woodbury Lakes
The Woodbury Lakes shopping center continues its expansion with several notable additions. Herman Miller opened its first dedicated Minnesota showroom on May 15, offering a 2,243-square-foot space featuring the brand’s iconic ergonomic seating and home furnishings. Additional retailers including Anthropologie and Shake Shack are expected to open later this year, reflecting the center’s positioning as a premier regional destination.
Housing and Infrastructure Updates
A $92 million affordable housing development called The Meadows at Prairie Ridge is set to begin construction this summer at 580 Manning Ave. S. The 237-unit project from Broadway Street Development will offer apartments to residents earning 50-70% of the area median income, with completion expected in spring 2027.
Meanwhile, the city’s 2026 Road Rehabilitation Project is underway in the Boulder Ridge neighborhood, including pavement replacement along Afton Road and the construction of a new trail. Washington County is also building a roundabout at the Bailey Road and Settlers Ridge Parkway intersection.
Community Garden Thrives
The Woodbury Community Garden has entered its full 2026 season with all 96 in-ground plots, 35 raised beds, and 12 wheelchair-accessible beds claimed. The garden, located on Dale Road adjacent to Andy’s Bark Park, has grown significantly since its 2022 launch with just 16 plots, thanks to grants from Washington County, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and AARP Minnesota.
