This week in Maple Grove, healthcare workers made headlines as contract negotiations at the local hospital reached a critical point. Meanwhile, economic development continues at a brisk pace with major employer expansions underway, and the city prepares for a summer packed with community events. Here is your roundup of the latest news affecting our community.

Hospital Nurses Vote to Authorize Strike

Nearly 600 nurses at North Memorial Health’s Maple Grove Hospital have voted to authorize an unfair labor practice strike, according to the Minnesota Nurses Association. The decision comes after more than a year of contract negotiations, with nurses citing concerns over staffing levels, retention, and workplace protections. According to union representatives, there has been a 33% turnover rate among the nursing workforce at Maple Grove Hospital over the past three years.

Nurses are pushing for parity with their counterparts at North Memorial’s Robbinsdale Hospital, adopting the slogan “One North” to demand equal treatment across the health system. A strike is not immediate, as Minnesota law requires nurses to provide a 10-day notice before any walkout could begin. North Memorial Health stated it remains committed to negotiating in good faith and has contingency plans in place should a strike occur. The vote comes shortly after North Memorial announced a definitive agreement to merge with South Dakota-based Sanford Health.

Boston Scientific Continues Major Expansion

Boston Scientific is moving forward with plans to significantly expand its Maple Grove presence, reinforcing the city’s status as a medical technology hub. The company is seeking approval from the city to add another 300,000 square feet to its recently opened 400,000 square foot Arbor Lakes campus. The Maple Grove Planning Commission voted 6-0 in January to recommend the Phase II expansion to the City Council.

The four-story addition will include training areas, a cafeteria, fitness center, and lab space on the first floor, with additional labs and offices on upper floors. The expansion will also incorporate sustainability features such as electric vehicle charging stations, solar panels, and geothermal wells. Boston Scientific is already the largest employer in Maple Grove with approximately 4,000 workers, and the expansions across both the Arbor Lakes and Weaver Lake campuses are expected to bring the company’s total workforce in the city to 7,000 employees.

Community Center Expansion Advances

The City of Maple Grove continues work on its Community Center renovation and expansion project. Phase one of the project has already begun construction, with phase two anticipated to start in September 2026. The city is seeking a sales tax exemption from the state legislature for this regional recreation asset, with the estimated sales tax for the project valued at $2.375 million.

Throughout the Phase Two improvements, the Parks and Recreation Department will continue offering programs and services at alternate locations across the community. Department offices will temporarily relocate to the Government Center during construction. Design plans for the second phase were approved by the Park Board and City Council in January, with construction bidding targeted for early spring 2026.

Summer Events Season Kicks Off

Maple Grove residents have plenty to look forward to as the city’s summer event season gets underway. The city’s annual online photography contest runs through June 30, with cash prizes awarded and winning photos featured in city publications. The Sounds of Summer concert series kicks off on June 22 at Town Green, offering free concerts and movies throughout the season.

The Maple Grove Farmers Market, voted the 2025 Best Farmers Market in the state by Minnesota’s Best Readers’ Choice, continues every Thursday through October 15 at the Maple Grove Community Center. This year, the market features a new, larger parking lot with improved accessibility. Residents can also look forward to Chalkfest, the popular street art festival tentatively scheduled for June 13 and 14 on Main Street in downtown Maple Grove.
