Extreme Fire Danger Across Northern Minnesota
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for 13 counties in northern Minnesota, including Itasca County, due to extreme fire danger conditions. The warning, which went into effect on Monday, July 13, covers areas experiencing very high temperatures, strong wind gusts, and low relative humidity. The DNR has suspended open burning permits and discourages campfires during the warning period. Residents are urged to check any recent outdoor burning to ensure fires are fully extinguished. The U.S. Forest Service has also temporarily closed the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness as multiple wildfires continue to burn in the Superior National Forest. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an air quality alert for 47 counties lasting through Friday, July 17, due to smoke from the wildfires.
Library Achieves $30,000 Matching Grant Goal
In a significant victory for local services, the Grand Rapids Area Library announced it has successfully matched a $30,000 anonymous donation. The grant was announced June 24 at a community meeting, requiring the library to raise its own $30,000 by September 1 to receive the funds. In a July 8 Facebook post, the library confirmed it had met the goal. The Supporting Our Grand Rapids Area Library Fund was created in response to a $260,000 decrease in city funding that led to reduced hours, staff cuts, and a 65% reduction in the materials budget. The money will be used to expand operating hours in 2027, with hopes of opening four to six days per week plus Saturdays. Currently, the library is open just seven hours a day, Monday through Wednesday.
United Way Launches Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive
As families prepare for the upcoming school year, United Way of 1000 Lakes has kicked off its annual Stuff the Bus drive. The campaign runs through August 25, with community members invited to donate new backpacks and classroom essentials. The need is significant: across North Central Minnesota, including Itasca County, 43% of households with children live below the ALICE threshold, meaning many working families struggle to afford basic necessities including school supplies. Families in the service area, including Grand Rapids, Cohasset, Deer River, and surrounding communities, may register children to receive a backpack filled with grade-specific supplies. The Backpack Packing Party will take place August 25 through 27 at Yanmar Arena, with distribution scheduled for August 27.
Free Range Food Co-op Hosts Community Celebration
The Free Range Food Co-op is inviting the public to “Raise the Roost” on Saturday, July 18, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Klockow Brewing in Grand Rapids. The family-friendly gathering is free and open to everyone, whether longtime co-op owners or newcomers curious about the project. The event will feature live music from Emily LaPlant, P.K. Mayo, and Tattletale, along with a silent auction and giveaways. FRFC, founded in 2016, has grown to more than 1,400 local owners and has raised over $1 million in community investment. The co-op has a signed purchase agreement on a downtown location and is working toward its goal of opening a community-owned grocery store.
